The Importance of Learning to Spell in Year 2                                         

In Year 2, children continue to build the foundations they need to become confident, independent writers. Learning to spell is an important part of this journey. They take part in daily phonics lessons to deepen their understanding of letters and sounds and begin to learn spelling rules to help them write new words. They also continue to learn and practise the spelling of common high-frequency words.

Spelling Homework

At the beginning of year two, children will be assessed on their spelling of the first 100 high frequency words. Incorrect spellings will be highlighted in green and sent home. As these are words that your child will encounter frequently, in both reading and writing, we ask for your support in helping your child to read and spell these words.  

In addition, children will receive a further set of spelling words to practise at home each week. These words may be linked to the phonics and spelling patterns we are learning in class or taken from the Year 2 curriculum spelling list.

Practising at home gives children extra time to remember their spellings, build confidence, and apply them accurately in their writing. We really appreciate your support in helping your child develop these important skills.

• Write sentences

• Use magnetic letters

• Use chalk outdoors

• Write in sand
