The Importance of Reading at Home

Reading regularly at home has a significant impact on children’s progress in Year 2. We ask you to read with your child for 10 minutes a day, as this small daily routine can make a big difference to their progress. These short sessions help build confidence, strengthen decoding skills, and develop a deeper understanding of what they read.

We appreciate that daily reading may not always be possible, but any regular practice makes a real difference. After reading with your child, please sign their reading diary so we have a record of their progress and can celebrate their efforts in school.

As well as learning to decode words, it is just as important for children to understand what they are reading, as this helps develop real enjoyment and a love of reading. Asking your child a range of questions that focus on retrieving key facts, as well as those that require inference and deduction, where they use clues from the text and their own thinking, will support your child’s progress.
