EYFS Early Learning Goals

What Are the EYFS Early Learning Goals?

The Early Learning Goals (ELGs) are a set of key developmental milestones that children typically aim to reach by the end of their Reception year. They are part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which supports children’s learning and development from birth to age five. These goals cover a broad range of areas including communication, physical development, social skills, literacy, maths, creativity, and understanding the world around them.

The ELGs help provide a rounded picture of how your child is progressing and where they might need extra support. They are designed to reflect the kinds of skills and knowledge children use in everyday life—like speaking clearly, playing cooperatively, recognising numbers, and expressing themselves through art or movement.

Rather than being formal tests, the goals are observed through play, conversation, and daily activities. They help us celebrate each child’s unique strengths and ensure they’re ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
