Supporting your child at home

School Readiness

Starting school is an exciting milestone for both children and parents. At [School Name], we want every child to begin their school journey feeling happy, confident, and ready to learn.

School readiness isn’t about being able to read, write, or count before starting school — it’s about helping your child develop the skills, confidence, and independence they need to enjoy learning and settle into school life.

What Does “School Readiness” Mean?

A child who is ready for school will usually:

  • Be curious and eager to learn – They enjoy exploring new things and asking questions.

  • Be able to listen and follow simple instructions – Such as sitting for story time or tidying up when asked.

  • Be independent in daily routines – For example, going to the toilet, washing their hands, or putting on their coat.

  • Be able to play and share with others – Taking turns, making friends, and joining in with group activities.

  • Be able to express their needs and feelings – Using words or gestures to ask for help or share how they feel.

How You Can Help at Home

There are lots of simple ways to support your child’s readiness for school:

  • Talk together every day — chat about what you see, do, and notice.

  • Read stories regularly and talk about the pictures and characters.

  • Encourage independence — let your child practise putting on their shoes, using cutlery, or tidying toys.

  • Giving opportunities for play — both imaginative and physical play help build social skills and coordination.

  • Establish routines — consistent bedtimes, mealtimes, and calm mornings make the school day easier.

Homework

At Stenson Primary School, we believe homework is an important way for children to practise what they’ve learnt in school, develop independence, and share their learning with their families. Homework should be a positive experience that helps build confidence and a love of learning.

How You Can Help at Home

Here are some practical ways you can support your child:

  • Create a calm, quiet space
Find a comfortable place where your child can focus without distractions such as TV or devices.

  • Establish a routine
Try to do homework at a regular time so it becomes part of your child’s routine.

  • Encourage independence
Be available to help, but encourage your child to try first — praise effort rather than just results.

  • Stay positive
Show interest in what they’re learning and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small.

  • Keep communication open
If your child is struggling, talk to their teacher early. We can suggest strategies or provide extra support.

  • Make it fun!
Learning doesn’t just happen on paper — cooking, reading together, counting objects, or exploring nature can all help reinforce school topics in enjoyable ways.
